New forum discussion

Hi, I'm checking out new forum, looks pretty good, seems there is all that is needed.

Some small things I just ran into:

  • While creating this post I noticed there is no tag this post would fit into, but creating new tag requires a reputation. I would consider adding something like uncathegorized tag just so the users are not forced to use incorrect tag in such cases. Just a thought tho.
  • Seems like there is no @user. That may not be needed and may even be good for Orne so he doesn't get unnecessary pings :) There are alternatives like following a tags, following specific thread and comment notifications, so @user is probably not really needed, I guess?

It seems that migrating the data would not be possible. Thats not surprising, its just a pity we might loose some old but informative threads. Any thoughts on how long the maintenance or maybe read-only period would be?

Yes, that is correct. While I have created quite a few tags, I assume there will be cases where I need to add new tags and update the question accordingly. I will add an uncategorized in case none of the tags are matching.

There is not, but you can invite an user (See Invite People).

When moving over, my plan is to put the forum in read-only mode. I don't know about the period yet but this can be an extended period (a year maybe?). I think the steps will be:

  1. Make this platform public
  2. Put forum in maintenance mode
  3. Replace all links
  4. Once this platform has enough content, remove forum from search index
  5. Once most relevant content is on this platform, sunset the forum
